Felting

The start of the journey for our felted items is the 65%wool 35% alpaca yarns used in the Island Range of Hand Knitting.

It is knitted or crocheted into an oversized item and then repeatedly felted by hot soapy washing by both hand and machine, so all the fibres mat togther so shrink to the required size. The surface of the fabric is then shaved to remove any pills or sticking up alpaca guard hair fibres to give a better finsh.

The fabric is very robust and an excellent natural insulator so we’ve turned our chunky weight yarns into heavyweight Seat Pads and Hike Mats and our aran weight yarns into midweight Coasters, Teapot Mats and Place mats.

They can be machine washed on cool and even cool tumbled

The designs are all available in four distinctive colourways – specially created for these felted items from special moments of inspiration on the Island. They are named Harbour, Cuthbert, Priory and Pilgrim after the moments and photographs we managed to capture of this special place. For details and descriptions please scroll to the bottom of the page to the bottom of this page.

All of our felted item are part of the ‘inspirations:colour’ group.

Seat Pads

Approximately 16″//40cm diameter made of heavyweight felted wool and alpaca

A heavyweight crocheted circular piece which is felted to a very thick mat. Suitable for indoor or outdoor use.

Whilst these Seat Pads are not waterproof the very dense fabric does resist damp coming up through it for quite some time. We’ve put them to the test for you – by putting them down on a very wet bench and sitting on them for half and hour, watching the view and drinking coffee – and we stayed dry.

The Pads were a bit damp on the underside but a few minutes over an airer in the bathroom or even in a tumble dryer on low heat and they are dry again. (We wouldn’t recommend tumbling them if they are dripping wet from washing as there may be a tiny bit of potential shrinkage left, but from damp to dry is fine)

Available in all four colourways – Pictured here in ‘Harbour’The cardboard point of sale label is easily removeable

Hike Mats

(seen here on the right of the temporary photograpgh – these were test pieces and not available to order)

Approximate size: 18″/45 cm x 14″/35cm made of heavyweight felted wool and alpaca

The knitted fabric is a little less dense than that created by the crotchet used in the Seat Pads, so it is supple enough to easily roll up to stuff into your rucksack. The rolled mat fit into a deep bottle holder pocket or can be strapped to the back of the pack.

The Hike Mat will keep you warm and comfortable whilst sitting on damp rocks, benches or other picnic places. Whilst they are not waterproof the dense fabric does resist the damp rising up for quite some time.

The idea to make these came from a lockdown walk where we stopped for a rest sitting on some rocks near the base of the castle. The rocks were much damper than we had thought and the walk home was not terribly pleasant. We’ve kept out test pieces of these mats and use them often!

Coaster

Approximately 4 1/2 ” / 11 cm diameter made of midweight felted wool and alpaca

A midweight crocheted circular piece which is felted into a thick mat.

The inspiration for using this technique of crochet and felting for the tableware pieces was a mistake of letting a piece of crochet being worked on get caught up in a hot wash. The ‘ruined’ piece sat on the kitchen worktop forlornly for several days and then had a hot mug of coffee put down on it by happy accident…

The concentric rings of colour are very similar to those in the Teapot Mat and Placemat and they are all designed to complement each other.

Colourways

All of the felted items are available in each of the four colourways. Please note that the heavyweight seat pad and hike mats are made from slightly different hues to the midweight tableware pieces.

The patterns are made up of varying rings or stripes of the colours shown in a particular order and are not available as specific individual colour choices. In one colourway the Coasters, Teapot Mats and Placemats all use the colours in the same order, but the depth of the rings may vary to give the right balance of colour to the piece, but they do complement each other beautifully.

When we’ve had pieces stay in stock long enough to take photographs of them, these colour guides will be of the actual products – but in the meantime, we’ve used some of our yarns to make a temporary colour guide for each yarn weight and colourway! Please note that as with all photographs displayed on screen, that the colours are an as accurate representation as we can make them, but may appear differently on one device to another, and may vary slightly from the actual product.
